Best AI calorie counter apps in 2026: how to actually choose one

Logging speed
The single strongest predictor of whether you are still tracking in three months. Time one meal end to end in each app you try — including opening it, capturing, correcting and saving. Anything over about ten seconds a meal will not survive a busy week.
Correction workflow
Every AI estimate is sometimes wrong. What matters is how many taps it takes to fix a portion or rename an item. Apps that make correction awkward push people towards accepting bad entries, which quietly poisons the data.
Honest uncertainty
A confidence score or equivalent signal tells you which entries deserve a second look. An app that presents every estimate with identical certainty is hiding information you need.
Barcode coverage
Photo recognition is the wrong tool for packaged food. Any serious tracker needs a barcode scanner backed by a real product database, so labelled items get exact values instead of estimates.
Free tier that is actually usable
